Süd Tirol Weinstrasse

South Tyrol Wine Road

Süd Tirol Weinstrasse

In recent weeks I have been exploring more of the Süd Tirol Weinstrasse and it has really impressed me. This time of year, just after winter has broken, it is changing on a daily basis because so much grows in this region, there are grapes and orchards everywhere. The climate is superb and the landscape takes your breath away! It has everything from snow-capped mountains, castles, amazing colours and great local produce.

Just over a month ago my wife and I spent the weekend in Monte Berg, an area near the town of Eppan, we did lots of walking and discovered some places I would really enjoying sharing with people. One of our favourites was the walk down from Perdonig to Hockeppan Castle, despite the 25 minute walk being on a pretty rough trail it was certainly worth it! The castle, the views and the food at the castle restaurant were amazing. Later in the day we visited the winery of Cantina Girlian and we were most impressed by their complimentary wine tasting selection, in fact it was so good we of course bought a couple of bottles. Being a big fan of Asian food and curries we opted for few bottles of Gerwürztraminer.
Our favourite town in the region was Kaltern, it has a beautiful central square and the town itself wonderfully overlooks Lake Kalterersee. I have ear marked it as a great place for an Italian ice-cream or Aperol Spritz!
I returned to the area a few week later and everything had changed, it was even more stunning! Everything had grown and the colours were even more beautiful. I again visited spots like Missian, St. Pauls and Schloss Englar, all offer fantastic photographic opportunities. I can‘t wait to go back.
